Overview

Google Analytics reports how many people visit your published site, where they come from and which pages they use. The website builder has a dedicated field for your Google tag, so you do not have to paste any tracking code by hand.

Before you start

  • A Google account.
  • Your site must be published — the tracking tag is added to the live site only, never to the preview you see while editing.

Step 1 — Create a Google Analytics property

  1. Go to Google Analytics and sign in with your Google account.
  2. Open Admin, then Create and follow the prompts to create an account, a property and a web data stream for your domain.
  3. Open the data stream you created and copy its Measurement ID. It looks like G-XXXXXXXXXX.

You do not need to copy the tag code itself. The builder adds it for you — the Measurement ID is all you need.

Step 2 — Add the ID to your site

  1. Log in to your website administration.
  2. In the left-hand menu, open Settings.
  3. Open the Special Features section and find Site Statistics.
  4. Choose Google Analytics from the Site Statistics dropdown. A field for the ID appears underneath it.
  5. Paste your Measurement ID into the field and save the change.
  6. Publish your site. The tag is written into the published pages, so the change only takes effect once the site is republished.

Which IDs the field accepts

  • G-XXXXXXXXXX — a Google Analytics 4 Measurement ID. This is what new properties use.
  • AW-XXXXXXXXX — a Google Ads conversion ID, if you want to track ads rather than analytics.
  • UA-XXXXXX-X — a legacy Universal Analytics ID. The field still accepts it, but Google stopped processing Universal Analytics data in 2023, so an ID in this format will not collect anything. If yours still starts with UA-, create a GA4 property and replace it.

Two things to be aware of. The field holds one ID, so you cannot use it for Google Analytics and Google Ads at the same time. And a Google Tag Manager container ID (GTM-XXXXXXX) is not accepted here — add a Tag Manager container through Settings > Special Features > Edit Site Code instead.

Step 3 — Confirm data is arriving

  1. Open your published site in a browser.
  2. In Google Analytics, open Reports > Realtime. Your own visit should appear within a minute or two.

Standard reports are not instant — allow up to 24–48 hours before the daily reports, acquisition and audience data fill in.

If you see no data

  • Check you are looking at the published site. The tag is not present in the editing preview, so testing from inside the builder will never register a visit.
  • Republish. If the ID was added but the site was not published afterwards, the live pages still carry the old version.
  • Check the ID format. A UA- ID collects nothing today.
  • Check for ad blockers. Many block analytics requests, including your own test visit.

Where to go next

Google's own documentation covers the reports themselves: Set up Analytics for a website and Google Analytics 4 reports.
